Rond 1860 werd de Waalse chemicus Jacques Blockx benaderd door zijn kunstenaarsvrienden met de vraag een aquarelverf te ontwikkelen die vergelijkbaar was met de aquarelverf die door de oude meesters werd gebruikt. In 1865 was zijn aquarelverf klaar. "Een aquarelverf zo helder als een zonnige zomerdag."

Around 1860, the Walloon chemist Jacques Blockx was approached by his artist friends asking him to develop a watercolour similar to the watercolours used by the old masters. By 1865, his watercolours were ready. “A watercolour as bright as a sunny summer day,” he said.
Blockx watercolours proved extremely popular and to this day are the choice of many an artist.
